The new Gmail is fully redesigned customized app right now in 2018 after the officially announced by Google at the developer event of Google I/O 2018. The new refreshing colorful theme with design looks quite similar to the previous one still you can notice some of the UI changes in it.


  1. The mouse cursor brings a new right side floating action buttons in every single mail.
  2. The Compose mail button is now changed to a bigger size with a colorful plus icon.
  3. The right sidebar has now ‘Get Add-ons’ option to use Gmail Add-ons from GSuit Marketplace.
  4. Three new extra options available on the right sidebar – Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Tasks.
  5. Gmail expandable page size also featured by closing the left sidebar main menu for the wider viewing experience.
  6. Three new colored category tab of Primary with Red bar, Social tab with Blue bar, and the Promotions tab with Green bar.
  7. The search bar is also redesigned with mail size, date, menu category, attachments, charts, words count etc. for better mail search.

The new Gmail design update has been around for a few weeks but the Google I/O 2018 brings the feature’s announcement about this. Google already getting so much smarter and better than before but the new Gmail also brings so many features and customizations in it. If you want to use or try the new Gmail feature then log into your Gmail account and click on the right side gear icon > click ‘Try the new Gmail’ option and you’re done.

Confidential Mode

The new redesigned Gmail got a useful feature called ‘Confidential Mode’, this feature will add more privacy and security filter with a PIN generated text SMS for any particular mail. This also set an expiry date to the users on sent emails. This will mainly help business sectors for any private mail category. The update will come in phases and it will take some time.

Smart Reply Mode

Google has come with another useful feature called ‘Smart Reply Mode’ in Gmail. After this update, Gmail users can give replies to emails through some quick notes or templates. This smart feature can read your new inbox messages and can give a reply quickly. This feature already enabled in Gmail app for Android and iOS devices which can give the user a few auto-suggestions.

Customizations and Services

The new Gmail has some customizations as well in terms of look and options. The integrated G-Suit Marketplace is now available for Gmail Add-ons. This seems quite similar to Google Web Store and this will bring so many customization features in it. As mentioned above, all the mail category option, compose mail, Google Keep, Calander, Tasks, individual mail actions – all are now changed. These will take a few days to get used with it.

Smart Compose Feature

This Smart Compose Feature is one of the major updates among all. Though the feature available in Gmail App but the overall update and features announced at Google I/O 2018 event. This feature will let the user write any reply emails or fresh emails to recipients smartly and quickly as an auto-complete or auto-suggestion mode. The machine-learning technology with AI brings the new Gmail a step ahead in terms of understanding the subject line and recipient id – what to write and type exactly. This will consume a lot of time and effort.

Notifications and Security Features

Google has also tried to improve security features of the desktop Gmail service. The company briefed at Google I/O 2018 that the new Gmail machine learning algorithms will bring security improvements and this can run safety scans of every email periodically for unwanted threads and advertisements. The Gmail will also let the user know where to keep that mail or not and whether unsubscribe any emailer or not for potential threats. All the conversational threads and important email notifications will bring top priority to the users. This feature will also help for better user experience.
