The official Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone is here announced with quite impressive specifications and features. The hexagonal shape and design seem literally amazing more than the Xiaomi Blackshark and Razer Phone. The Nubia Red Magic is the first gaming smartphone by ZTE Nubia. The device is featured with high-end specifications and interesting design but is it good enough to compete others in the market? Let’s find out.
Design and Appearance
The Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone is mainly focused on high-end gaming purposes like Xiaomi Blackshark and Razer Phone. The rear body is out of the metal frame and the design and cutting-edges are in hexagonal shape. Even the rear camera, LED flash and fingerprint sensor are also in hexagonal shape which looks quite premium and sturdy. The back has a long LED full strip light which is full of rainbow colors as well as the Razer’s gaming keyboard or mouse RGB backlit LED. It feels just like the same.
The nice round curved antenna lines are also typically placed on the top and bottom, which is also different than other smartphone antenna lines. There is also hexagonal curve texture on the rear surface for extra grip in hands and perfect look. The curves also have some type of graphite layers and air cooling vents for heat control. The device weighs around 185 grams and the body dimensions are 158.1 x 74.9mm x 9.5mm. The device comes in Red and Black color variant.
The Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone comes with a single rear 24MP camera which is a Samsung ISOCELL 5K2X7SX sensor with 0.9µm pixels with f/1.7 aperture lens. The front has also a single 8MP selfie camera with SK Hynix HI-846 sensor featured with 1.12µm pixels along with f/2.0 aperture wide-angle lens for better portrait selfies. It can record 1080p videos @30fps. As compared to the gaming smartphone it has a quite better camera sensor, at least better than Razer Phone.
Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone Specifications
The Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Soc along with 6GB/64GB and 8GB/128GB variant. The Snapdragon 835 chipset is older than the latest Snapdragon 845 chip and Xiaomi Blackshark also has the newer one. Still, the company decided to go with last generation processor. Nubia doesn’t mention about the expandable storage capacity, that means it doesn’t support any expandable storage.
The device comes with a 6-inch LTPS 18:9 aspect ratio display which has a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The display has a NEG Dinorex T2X-1 glass protection, which is a shockproof and scratch resistant glass, claimed by the company. Now we don’t know about the longevity or efficiency in comparison to the Corning Gorilla glass protection.
Additional Features and Connectivity
The Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone features a “GameBoost” performance mode for the software segment to run all high-end games without any lag or frame drop. The smartphone is quite compatible with MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena Video Games), PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds), and Fortnite gameplay. That “GameBoost” performance mode can be activated via a dedicated hardware button on the device. The device is packed with a bigger 3,800 mAh battery which is quite decent for bigger display and gaming. This will last for a day on moderate usage. The device also supports fast charging, so it could be easier to play graphics intensive games for a long time.
The Nubia Red Magic Gaming Smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with ZTE Nubia’s own customized Red Magic Launcher UI out of the box pack. It has a USB-C port for charging and data syncing. There is also a single DTS sound speaker outwent for an enhanced gaming experience. As mentioned above, the hexagonally shaped fingerprint scanner is placed at the back below the rear camera module.
The smartphone supports single SIM only without any storage expansion. It includes all the necessary connectivity options like Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, single band 5GHz Wi-Fi, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, 4G LTE, MIMO 2×2 etc. It also has all major sensors such as Gyro, Proximity, Compass, Ambient Light, Magnetometer, Hall sensor etc. The device has a 3.5mm audio jack on the top which is a great thing.
Price and Availability
The Nubia Red Magic will be available on 26th April at a price of around $399 (INR 26,400) via IndieGogo. The handset will be available in China from 25th April for around 2,499 Yuan ($399) for the 6GB/64GB variant. The 8GB/128GB variant smartphone will be priced at around 2,999 Yuan ($479). ZTE Nubia also providing some discounts and offers on first few customers by giving free t-shirts and backpacks. You can check more details from Nubia website.
As per the design and built quality, it is fully functional and totally different than other flagship smartphones or gaming smartphones. The display quality is also decent but the glass protection assurance is lacking somewhere in comparison with the Corning Gorilla glass protection. And the last major cons is the processor part. ZTE Nubia decided to go with previous generation Snapdragon 835 Soc than the latest gen powerful and efficient Snapdragon 845 chipset. That is what the device will get some negative effect on popularity and sales. Though the Snapdragon 835 Soc isn’t bad at all and Still can be a game changer. However, we don’t know about the GPU as well. The GPU portion is also taking a lead part in gaming.
