Xiaomi today launched their most-awaited flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi 8 along with Xiaomi Mi 8 Special Edition, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, and MIUI 10 in China. The latest flagship premium grade smartphone is the successor of the last generation Xiaomi Mi 6. Xiaomi has already been slightly late to come with Xiaomi Mi 8 device, as this year Xiaomi has completed their 8th anniversary. So they skipped the Xiaomi Mi 7 smartphone.

Overview

From last few months, so many leaks and rumors came out but in a few days, we have seen display notch, under display fingerprint sensor with 3D face recognition technology which was real. Xiaomi Mi 8 also entered into the display notch family officially like OnePlus 6 and LG G7 ThinQ. The company also claims that the under display fingerprint sensor is much faster than the Vivo X21 smartphone. So let’s have a look at the highlighted features.

Though the last time, Xiaomi didn’t promote and launch their flagship Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone in India. But this time the company already mentioned in the launch event that the Xioami Mi 8 will launch in India by showing some of the Indian popular places with the Mi 8 logo. That means we have to wait for few weeks for the Indian launch.

Xiaomi also mentioned and focused on their mid-range budget segment smartphones such as Xiaomi Mi 6X and the Xiaomi Redmi S2 device. Xiaomi has already gained almost 87% higher growth than the Samsung, Apple, and Huawei brands, which is appreciable.

The MIUI 10 also comes with the new customization options and Artificial Intelligence (AI) features.

MIUI 10

The new MIUI 10 is the successor of the latest and current generation MIUI 9. The MIUI 9 is currently available for all the supported devices from Android 6.0 Marshmallow to Android 8.0 Oreo. Xiaomi already started the closed beta programme for the new MIUI 10 OS. Just like Android P default features, MIUI 10 also comes with the default screen gestures. The optimized UI will be much faster and smoother than the MIUI 9.

The MIUI 10 also comes with the new customization options and Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. Just like the Google Assistant and Apple Siri, Xiaomi also unveiled today with their new AI-powered Voice Assistant. The left-side app vault tab is now fully customizable along with more improved sections and news feed option. The new Xiaomi Voice Assistant can also read text messages and can give updates about traffic situations.

Recent Menu

The MIUI 10 is purely focused on Machine Learning and AI integration, which can also control your Xioami Smart Home devices. The new multi-tasking recent menu will have a new interface. The new recent menu maximizes the screen space and supports full-screen display gestures. Swipe tabs to delete the recent apps and you can also tap and long press it for more options.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with the 6.21-inch full HD+ AMOLED display with 88.5% screen-to-body ratio. It is an 18.7:9 aspect ratio display with 600nit brightness. The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The device runs on Android 8 Oreo out of the box. It will get first MIUI 10 stable update as well. The device comes with the notch display and the notch contains a single front camera, earpiece, proximity sensor, Infrared lighting, and the Infrared lens for the 3D facial recognition screen unlock process.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi 8 has a dual rear camera with a 12MP primary sensor with 1.4-micron pixels and a 12MP of the secondary sensor with dual pixel autofocus technology with dual tone dual LED flash. It supports 4-axis OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) feature for shake-free video recording. The AI scene detection, AI portrait mode, and improved video editor mode will come in handy. The Xiaomi Mi 8 also features the Studio Lightning Mode just like the Apple iPhone X device.

The Xioami Mi 8 comes with the NFC support and dual GPS technology. The dual frequency GPS technology works more accurately in location tracking by eliminating radio frequency disturbances from buildings and other objects. It also reduces signal delays and improves map navigation. It supports 4G VOLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac a/b/g/n, dual-band 2.4GHz, and 5.0GHz Wi-Fi Direct, Fast Charging, Wireless Charging, USB-C port etc.

The Xioami Mi 8 comes with the NFC support and dual GPS technology.

All other major sensors are available such as Proximity, Ambient Light, Compass, Magnetometer, Gyro, Hall, Step counter sensor etc. Xiaomi claims that the under display fingerprint sensor in Xiaomi Mi 8 is much faster than the Vivo X21 smartphone. The device transparent back case also will be available in the retail box pack. However, there is information about the battery capacity.

Animoji Feature, and 3D Face Recognition

Xioami today also revealed the new Animoji based feature in the Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone just like Apple iPhone X. The new Animoji seems quite similar to iPhone X Animoji but the icons and characters are slightly different. We don’t know the Animoji name so we can assume it as ‘Xiaomoji’. The Face ID feature includes 3D Facial Recognition technology that unlocks the device lock screen faster by scanning your registered face structure via Infrared light and sensor.

The new Animoji seems quite similar to iPhone X Animoji but the icons and characters are slightly different.

The Xioami Mi 8 smartphone with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage variant is priced at CNY 3,699 (Rs.39,000 Approx). The device will be available from June 5 for sale in China. There will be four colors such as Black, Golden, Blue, and Grey.

The company today also announced the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE (Special Edition) smartphone with a smaller 5.88-inch 18.7:9 aspect ratio full HD+ AMOLED display. The device also has a notch. The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE comes with a 12MP + 5MP of dual rear camera setup with LED flash. The front features a single 20MP of selfie camera with AI features. It also supports low light photography very good.

However, the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC.

The Xioami Mi 8 SE device base model is priced at CNY 1,799 (Rs.19,000 Approx). Xioami Mi 8 SE will also be available in Black, Red, Blue, Golden colors.
