Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Launched With 4K HDR Display

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium smartphone launched today on 16th April 2018 and will be available soon after this summer. Though the price not announced yet, still we can expect it as a 2018’s flagship device from Sony. Previously Sony launched their top two models at MWC 2018 as Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. This time Sony upgrades the dual camera setup with 4K HDR display. The company also put some efforts in their battery and other specs as well.

Design and Display

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium has new curvy design quite identical with Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. The rectangular curvy bar sized rounded corners looking great and premium too. That mirror finish design is very charming while holding in hand. The company upgrades this time with their display which will be the biggest change in 2018 with 4K HDR display. It has a 2.5D curved 5.8-inch full HD+ IPS LCD display with 4K resolution and a pixel density of 2160 x 1080 pixels. It has a new vibration feedback system that basically rumbles feedback to match whatever is happening on the screen. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and the back is also framed by the glass panel. It is a 16:9 aspect ratio display with almost 760 PPI.

The new Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Soc which is an Octa-core processor based on 10nm architecture Kryo 385 clocked up to 2.8GHz. It is coupled with 6GB of RAM with 64GB of onboard storage. The storage can be expandable up to 400GB via microSD card. The device is packed with Adreno 630 GPU which is compatible with Snapdragon 845 chip for low-power consumption and high graphics performance. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the back below the dual camera module.

Premium Camera in Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium

This time Sony enhanced the camera department than the previous. Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium has the dual rear camera this time. The primary camera is a 19MP with 1.22 micron RGB Exmor RS sensor with a f/1.8 aperture and the secondary camera is a 12MP Monochrome sensor with a f/1.6 aperture with 1.55 micron. Huawei, Apple, and Samsung have also used telephoto lens sensor for perfect portrait shots. The rear dual cameras and record 4K videos @30fps. Sony claims that the Xperia XZ2 Premium has a maximum ISO level of 51,200. It can record videos as high as 12,800 ISO level. The single front-facing camera comes with a 13MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The front camera can also record 1080p videos @30fps.

Sony also improved the picture quality to reduce the graininess in the picture due to the higher ISO level. It called “AUBE fusion image signal processor” can combine the data from both sensors, optimized for low light and reduce noise so you get better results.

Sony also claimed that “it uses ultra low light capture which only seen in interchangeable lens cameras.”

Portrait mode and monochrome shots will be introduced via a software update in Q3 of 2018. It can also record super slo-mo 1080p videos @960fps like Samsung Galaxy S9 series. Both the cameras support PDAF, auto HDR, Panorama mode, and monochrome shots as well.

Other Features, Pricing, and Availability

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium will come with a non-removable 3,540 mAh battery. It also supports Quick Charge 4.0 and wireless charging as well. The company didn’t include the 3.5mm audio jack in this device. It includes connectivity features like Bluetooth v5.1, NFC, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac a/b/g/n/ac. The device will run on Android 8.1 Oreo with the latest Xperia UI out of the box pack.

Xperia XZ2 Premium smartphone will be available in two color variants such as Black and Silver. The front and back are covered with glass panel and the frame is made out of aluminum. It weighs around 236 grams. The XZ2 Premium won’t be cheap and expected to be priced around $1,000 at least. Though there is no confirmation about the launch in India, still we can expect it to be launched in India after May month.
